War and peace pre reform russian post reform russian translit voyn i mir vjna i mir is a novel by the russian author leo tolstoy it is regarded as a central work of world literature and one of tolstoys finest literary achievements. After anna karenina i was looking forward to war and peace being more epic and heart rending and i have not been disappointed so far the story line seems a little bit rushed at times but this was a truly mammoth story and andrew davies has a reputation for making fine series out of monumental classics. It is an alphabetical list and short biography of the historical characters and places mentioned in war and peace it includes a short chapter summary at the very end of the book there is a chapter summary for a collection of chapters sharing a theme or describing the same event. And so it is with war and peace its hard to suspend disbelief when soldiers struggling across a river sound like someone dropping quarters into a toilet the other shortcoming is the appalling miscasting of henry fonda as pierre bezhukov. War and peace is a vast epic centred on napoleons war with russia while it expresses tolstoys view that history is an inexorable process which man cannot influence he peoples his great novel with a cast of over five hundred characters
